Eric's Interview

Q: Will you be going for the Triple Crown?
A: If you're referring to the SDP Triple Crown, no. The conventional Triple Crown, yes - it's possible that A Storm Of Swords will run in the 2nd leg of the SDP series, but it's more likely that he'll head elsewhere and a different horse from my stable (White Fang maybe) will contest the second leg. The objective with A Storm Of Swords is the Baltimore Crown as part of the conventional Triple Crown. I probably won't have an entry in the 3rd leg of the SDP Triple ... there's no way I'm running a 3yo at 2 miles in W7 if those are the conditions it is indeed carded at.

Q: Are you using these races as a prep for the Louisville Derby?
A: I guess I would be if I could run 5+ horses in the Derby, but that's not possible. As I mentioned on the SIMcast recently posted, the likely trio for the Derby from my barn consists of Doc Halladay, God, and Ice and Fire ... all three also ran stellar races this week. A Storm Of Swords strikes me as a Baltimore Crown prospect with Just Victory on top of East. It's the same cross that produced Just Ludicrous, so there's no need to push my luck running a Just Victory at 10 furlongs when I've got a trio of others by War Daddy and Flames that you'd expect to run 10 furlongs.

Q: How do you feel that next year the races will be on AW and restricted to CAN breds only?
A: Disappointed, insofar as I'm certainly not moving any stallions to Canada from my current base in New York. I have no young Canadian-bred dirt routers, let alone AW/Turf routers, so I won't be participating. That said, I'm supportive of efforts to build up state-bred programs as it's an area I feel the SIM doesn't always utilize to the degree it could. I just tend not to have much in the way of support to offer unless we're talking about races restricted to New York or California-bred horses, given the stallions I tend to use from my own and others' barns on a regular basis.
